Directions: By Bike | By BART | By Car
From the Golden Gate Bridge (by bike)
Use Lincoln Blvd., the first street in the Presidio National Park you
cross after leaving the bridge parking lot, and go left, downhill.
You'll ride underneath the approachway to the bridge and by the
National Cemetery (on your right). Presently, there are some barriers
across Lincoln as you reach the entrance to the cemetery but, on bike,
you can easily go around them and remain on Lincoln. If you prefer,
follow the "structured" route and you'll emerge on the old parade
ground. Just go left (downhill) to return to Lincoln. The fire station
goes by on your left, you go through a 4-way stop intersection (after
stopping, right?) and begin a gradual climb. Go left at the 3-way stop
onto Lombard. As you exit the park, go right on Lyon. Take the next
left onto Greenwich. Go about six blocks to Steiner and turn right.
Union is just two blocks and we are on the NW corner.
From the Bay Bridge (by bike)
Use BART... no permit required but no bikes are allowed during commute
hours M-F. Commute hours are posted at each station. Get off at Civic
Center. Try to emerge topside at UN Plaza or near the new Main Library,
which is a handy landmark. From the Plaza, ride toward City Hall, the
big dome to the west, cross (carefully) Hyde and ride by the statue
between the new and old libraries. Turn right on Larkin, then go two
blocks and turn left on Turk. Go one block and turn right on Polk.
You'll ride on Polk St. for about 15 blocks crossing, among others,
California and Broadway Streets. Go left on Green St. (which follows
Vallejo). Stay on Green until Steiner, which is about 9 blocks. Go
right on Steiner and we're a block away on the far, left corner.
From the peninsula (by bike)
There are several route choices. Beginning from the ocean side, you can
ride north on Skyline Dr. (Hwy 35) and take a left onto the Great
Highway at the the three-way stop with Lake Merced on your right (after
the stoplight at John Muir Blvd.). Follow the Great Highway until
Lincoln and then turn into Golden Gate Park. Go east through the park
on JFK Dr. or MLK Dr. In the NE corner of the park is the Conservatory
of Flowers. Take Conservatory Dr. around behind it and go down the
short hill to the stoplight at Fulton and Arguello. Arguello is the
street straight ahead. Go north on Arguello, past Geary and California.
Turn right on Clay St. and go about two miles and take a left onto
Steiner. You'll climb for another two blocks followed by a level block
and then four blocks of steep downhill. City Cycle is on the far left
corner of Union and Steiner (Union is after Green St.).
From the bay side of the peninsula, get a local street map, if
possible, because there are way too many possible routes than can be
listed here. The best options include Alameda de las Pulgas beginning
in Atherton, Middlefield beginning in Mountain View, or Old Bayshore at
SFO. Aim for Bayshore and then 3rd. St. which will get you to downtown
SF. From 3rd. St. turn left onto 16th St. then right onto 7th St. which
comes immediately after going under an elevated freeway. When 7th
crosses Market, it jogs right and becomes McAllister St. Go right on
Larkin then left on Turk and then right on Polk. You'll ride on Polk
St. for about 15 blocks crossing, among others, California and Broadway
Streets. Go left on Green St. (which follows Vallejo). Stay on Green
until Steiner, which is about 9 blocks. Go right on Steiner and we're a
block away on the far, left corner.
From BART by BUS
Take BART to the Montgomery St. station. Come up on the north side of
Market at Crocker Plaza. Walk west on Market to Kearny. Go right on
Kearny to the bus stop. Take the #45 to Union & Fillmore. We are
one block west of Fillmore.
For those looking for an alternative route, the #22 Bus also stops
right across the street from the shop before turning to go down Union.
From BART by Bike (two options!)
1. Take BART to Civic Center. Come up at UN Plaza or in front of the
Orpheum Theatre. Ride west to Larkin. Go right on Larkin. Turn left on
Turk (comes after Golden Gate Ave). Take next right on Polk St. Ride
north on Polk for 17 blocks. Turn left on Green St.(comes after
Vallejo). Ride Green St. west for 9 blocks to Steiner. Go right on
Steiner. We are at the next street, Union, on the far right corner.
2. Take BART to Embarcadero. Ride along the waterfront on The
Embarcadero (ride away from the direction of the Bay Bridge). Best
biking street to turn onto from The Embarcadero is North Point. North
Point ends at Van Ness. Turn left on Van Ness and ride to Francisco,
two blocks. Go right on Francisco. Ride four blocks to Laguna. Go left
on Laguna. Cross Lombard and go two more blocks to Filbert. Turn right
on Filbert. Ride four blocks on Filbert to Steiner. Turn left on
Steiner. We are one block away at the corner of Steiner and Union.
BY CAR
From the Golden Gate Bridge (by car) Leaving the toll plaza, stay left,
the Marina direction. Then, stay right to get onto Lombard St. After
reaching Lombard, you'll go by 4 or 5 traffic lights. Steiner St.
follows Pierce St. Turn right on Steiner and go three blocks.
From the Bay Bridge (by car)
After leaving the bridge, follow signs for the 9th St./Civic Center
exits. Go straight from the off ramp onto Harrison St. taking the first
right onto 9th St. Follow 9th St. accross Market St. onto Hayes St.
Take Hayes for a few blocks and take a right onto Franklin. Stay on
Franklin for about 23 blocks, crossing Geary and California Streets,
among others. Take a left at Union, the shop is 7 blocks down at the
intersection of Steiner and Union on your right.
From the peninsula/Highway 101 South/SF Int'l Airport (by car)
Go north on 101 and take the 9th St. exit. Follow 9th St. accross
Market St. onto Hayes St. Take Hayes for a few blocks and take a right
onto Franklin. Stay on Franklin for about 23 blocks, crossing Geary and
California Streets, among others. Take a left at Union, the shop is 7
blocks down at the intersection of Steiner and Union on your right. |
